The history of human civilization parallels the history of its cities. From Athens under the rule of Pericles to the Jerusalem that Jesus knew, the great cities of the past defined the eras in which they were built and shaped the minds of countless generations. These places embodied the knowledge and beliefs of entire societies within their walls and yet due to the vagaries of history, these worlds are lost to us, buried beneath the ruins of time and memory.

After the fall of Rome, Italy slowly fell into a dark sleep. It wasn t until the 11th century when the Holy Roman Empire loosened its grip on Italy, that it reawakened. Autonomous city-states emerged, and though ravaged by waves of the plague, these tiny republics began to revitalize their cities and build on a massive level not witnessed since the rise of the Rome. In the late 15th and 16th centuries, alliances among various city-states continually shifted as foreign superpowers tried to sink their claws into Italy. France, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire fought out their battles with each other on Italian soil, while the threat of the Turks lurked off the shores of Venice. The masters who are most known for creating the works of art and architecture of the Renaissance, were also the greatest military and civil engineers of the time. With a knowledge of the ancients and a thirst for new invention, engineering rose to heights not seen since the Roman Empire - advancing methods in everything from civilian projects, to architecture, and finally - to war. Some of the epoch s greatest feats of engineering were: The creation of a vast underground aqueduct system in Siena. The Building of the cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore by Brunelleschi. The advancement of fortification and firepower by engineers like Sangallo and di Giorgio. And, the renewal of Rome s glory as a city from the repairing of the Roman aqueducts to the moving of St. Peters mammoth obelisk.

Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation
English | Publisher: Riverhead Hardcover; 1 edition (October 5, 2010) | ISBN-10: 1594487715 | 336 pages | PDF | 24.63 MB

The figure of the lone genius may captivate us, but we intuit that such geniuses’ creations don’t materialize in a vacuum. Johnson supported the intuition in his biography of eighteenth-century scientist Joseph Priestly (The Invention of Air, 2009) and here explores it from different angles using sets of anecdotes from science and art that underscore some social or informational interaction by an inventor or artist. Assuring readers that he is not engaged in “intellectual tourism,” Johnson recurs to the real-world effects of individuals and organizations operating in a fertile information environment.

Around 1,200 BC, an ancient Armageddon swept through the eastern Mediterranean and wiped out the greatest civilizations of the age in a single generation.
While the exact cause of this mass destruction remains a mystery, new archaeological evidence found among ancient ruins at unimaginable heights is now shedding light on the source of this great cataclysm. In this fascinating program, join renowned archaeologist Krzysztof Nowicki as he reveals the spectacular clues he has uncovered in his search for answers to this age-old puzzle. Discover how the evidence Nowicki and his colleagues have found supports the theory that the Bronze Age collapse may be explained by the invasion of a mysterious and destructive military force the Egyptians came to call the Sea Peoples.
