A young mother suffers her worst nightmare -the drowning of her young daughter. Two years later, Jamie gives birth to another girl. Helen is the young girlfriend of good-looking Jackson Baring. When Helen gets pregnant and marries Jackson, they decide to move to his hometown, Kilronan, and have a baby there. But his mother Martha, who lives there, starts to do weird things, and obviously she s not too friendly to Helen.

Jackson Baring wants his girlfriend, Helen, to meet his mother, Martha, so he brings her home for Christmas to Kilronan, their sumptuous Kentucky estate and horse farm. Later, after Helen gets pregnant, they marry and return to Kilronan to have the baby, but Martha aggressively intrudes and manipulates, telling obstetrician Dr. Hill how to deal with the birth and forbidding Helen from seeing Jacksons invalid granny, Alice. After learning some of Marthas past history from Alice, Helen soon decides she must make an escape from her demented mother-in-law.
