Some time after being shot on duty, Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes awakens in hospital to find it deserted with bodies strewn everywhere. He returns to his his home to find it abandoned but believes his wife and son may still be alive. He meets Morgan Jones and his son Duane who explain to him that the world has been overrun with zombies. The disease usually started with an infection and high fever followed by re-animation. The creatures are attracted to sound and eat flesh to survive. Morgan tells him that he thinks there is a refugee center in Atlanta and Rick sets off in the hope of finding his wife and child. Once there, he finds himself surrounded by the undead with little apparent hope of escaping.....until he hears a voice over the radio.

Rescued from his precarious situation, Rick meets a band of scavengers who have made their way to Atlanta to get supplies for their larger group that lives in a makeshift camp just outside the city. Theyre trapped in a department store with hundreds of zombies trying to break down the door to at them. Tensions are high and Rick ends up handcuffing one of them, a redneck named Merle Dixon, to keep him from killing someone. They try to escape through the sewers without success and Rick comes up with a clever scheme to draw the zombies away from their location. They have to leave one man behind however.

Rick and his newfound friends return to their camp where he is reunited with this wife Lori and his son Carl. Shes very happy to see her husband alive and well but is more than a bit angry at Shane Walsh, Rick s police partner, who told her he was dead. The returnees also have to tell Merle Dixons brother Daryl that they had to leave him behind. Rick is feeling some guilt over that and decides hes going to return to Atlanta to rescue him. What they find when they get there is not what they expected. Back at the camp, Shane takes out his frustrations on one of the men who has been physically abusing his wife.

While continuing their search for Merle, Rick and the others stumble across another group of survivors that kidnap Glenn and are willing to trade him for Ricks guns. At camp, Jim has been digging a bunch of holes and everyone else wonders why. Their question is answered, that night, when zombies attack.

Rick tries to make contact with Morgan to tell him his location. Back at camp, after the fight with the zombies, Jim has been bitten and is slowly beginning to change; Andrea mourns over Amys death; and Shane blames it all on Rick for leaving. Now that camp isnt safe anymore, Rick decides that its time for them all to move out. He plans to take them to the C.D.C., a military base, to find a cure for Jim and, hopefully, more survivors.

At the C.D.C., Rick and the others find Dr. Edwin Jenner, a scientist who is on the verge of suicide. But just when they think theyre safe, Jenner tells them that the building is on a countdown to self-destruct.

Daryl can not sleep during the night since Carol is weeping all the time. He decides to take a walk with Andrea to seek out Sophia. Meanwhile Shane and Otis are short of ammunition and surrounded by a large number of walkers. They decide to split to take a chance against the zombies. Glenn and T-Dog arrive in the farm and T-Dog s wound is disinfected and treated. When Herchel Greene is ready to operate on Carl, Shane arrives, completely shaken, with the necessary medical supplies. Then he recalls how he was able to survive.

Rick and Shane argue about whether the search for Sophia should end. Daryl gets hurt and has a hallucination involving someone from his past. Hershel warns Maggie to keep her distance from Rick s group. And Glenn finds out why Hershel doesn t want the group near the barn.
