The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later appear in Lester's film. The only thing missing is Paul's grandfather. 'Celebration: The Fans' Tale' was made for Granada in 1993, to commemorate thirty years since they last played the venue. Some of the footage shot specifically for that show was used in the more recent programme. Rounding things off we have 'Mersey Moments' from 1996, a short film made for Channel 4 and featuring, amongst others, The Bootleg Beatles. Here is the Remasters Workshop edition of the HMC set, at the right speed and with the phase corrected. (Its twenty years later and Im still fixing up Yellow Dog releases...) They did their own dubious editing job on the last track of disc 2 Long Tall Sally stopped abruptly on Tony Barrows cassette when the tape ran out. So they edited to the cv, except it was at a different pitch than the concert. That has been fixed here.
